It’s been one of those frigid snow-dump weeks that pushes Environment Canada to declare record-breaking weather in several cities – and all of us to groan and scramble for wherever we tucked away our sensible boots and coats.
Guess what’s decidedly less ill-prepared for winter? The fanny pack trend. All summer, we’ve been slinging the throwback pouches across a denim jacket–clad shoulder, or around the waist of our favourite floral dresses. But now, the belt bag is ready for the chillier months with puffer and Sherpa versions hitting stores just in time for our early-winter deep freeze.
And while this Insta-friendly trend sounds like it’s made for the Jenner and Hadid set, the first celeb to rock a winter-ready fanny pack was none other than Canada’s own Céline Dion, of course. (The singer’s recent fashion renaissance has included everything from Y Project’s viral underwear-like trousers to Iris Van Herpen’s laser-cut haute couture masterpiece.)
As she promotes her newly dropped Courage album and hops around for its corresponding tour, the Charlemagne, Quebec native is keeping her eccentric-style game strong, stepping out in New York’s chilly temps this week in a head-to-toe turquoise Max Mara look, complete with a matching fuzzy fanny pack.
Max Mara bag ($750, ca.maxmara.com).
While the star’s version costs a cool $740 (it comes in royal blue, red and black too, FYI), there are plenty of more affordable versions to choose from. For example, Lululemon’s popular belt bag will hit stores in black and red teddy versions ($78) next Monday, and Aritzia’s top-selling Super Puff coat is now available in a fanny-pack version ($48).
Take cues from Céline and stick to a consistent colour and texture—pair a caramel-coloured Sherpa version over your go-to chubby coat; match your puffer with its quilted fanny pack counterpart—or pick a bright contrasting colour to punctuate your winter style. Either way, it’s exactly the little bit of cheer we all need to get through those flurry-filled days.
