Fans of Jean-Michel Basquiat will have a new piece to add to their collection. Social media platform Vero collaborated with London-based independent publishing house NJG Studio to launch Basquiat: A Portrait. The limited edition book—only 500 copies were printed—features never-before-seen images of the artist shot by noted portrait photographer Richard Corman in the ’80s. Each is signed and numbered by Corman, and includes 12 large images and seven contact sheets, all housed in a hand-made slipcase.

The intimate portraits of Basquiat were taken at the artist’s New York City studio in 1984, while Corman was on assignment for L’Uomo Vogue. “While each of my photographs are similar in structure, from frame to frame Basquiat’s intensity, his intelligence, anger, curiosity, gaze, and hands and body language mutated and shifted,” said Corman in a press release of his decision to capture the artist in front of a plain backdrop, away from the colourful chaos of the room. “…I was interested in a simple portrait of a complicated genius.”

Basquiat: A Portrait retails for £200 and is available for purchase exclusively on the Vero app.
